The spice that stops the scroll

Everything in this row spent time over the coals. Suya rubbed in yaji, tilapia and croaker crisped on the skin, asun tossed fiery after the fire. Bold, charred, and unmistakably Nigerian.

Ukoni is Igbo for kitchen

The name is literal. Ukoni means kitchen, and that is what this place is. A working kitchen that happens to have tables, run by a family from Asaba.

Fish comes in whole. Pepper is measured by hand. The menu reads like a Delta family feast, because that is what we are serving.

No fusion and no deconstruction. Just the food people in Asaba want to eat.
